Fishtank mise-en-scene deconstruction

  • Diagonal composition suggest anxiety within the household in which they live in, again conforming to the conventions of an Urban Drama that the protagonist tends to be from a dysfunctional family.
  • The diegetic sound from the TV makes it clear that the younger girl is watching Cribs, a TV show where rich and famous people tour round their big and beautiful houses, this suggests that she would like to be living their life, as if she dreams to be in their world.
  • The girl also almost blends into the shot, she is not the dominant of the shot, suggesting her unimportance.
  • The room is also fairly small and cluttered as if there isn't much structure within the household.

  • Establishing long shot puts her at a public distance from us, maybe to suggest her lack of relationships with anyone even her mother in the film. She is completely alone in this shot and there is no light, maybe to suggest her lack of hope.
  • She is in the bottom of the left of the shot in a childlike position, which makes her appear vunerable. Her size is reduced by the vast amount of area surrounding her.
  • There is little sound included within this shot other than diegetic sound of her breathing heavily, suggesting her panic and lonliness, emphasizing the emptiness around her.

  • They are placed outside of the door frame suggesting that they are seperate from their mother who is in the room that the door is leading on to.
  • The light coming through the door signifies hope which could be awaiting her when she leaves for Ireland.
  • Her tracksuit is clear in this shot, which is a common outfit for someone in an urban drama to wear.
  • The mother of the girls uses profanties towards them which suggests that she doesn't have much respect or care for them, she leaves them to be extremely individual, conforming to the dysfuntional family that is common in an Urban drama.
