Gang Culture

Gang Culture

The current cultural problem which I am working on is Gang Culture, which has been an increasing problem in London in the roughly the past 8 years. By using recent stories and even recent films it has been easy to source different examples of the way gang culture has been portrayed in trailers and the media.

The above link is for a trailer for a film called shank and if our film trailer is on gang culture then this is where we wish to get our inspiration from as this film is based around gang culture and how it is predicted to escalate as the years go on.
The Shank trailer revolves around a young boy named junior who is a part of a group of youths who do not believe in killing which is the status quo in his surrounding area, this ties directly into real life gang culture as most of the people who are involved generally do not believe in taking another persons life but are drawn into it due to the situation they are placed in.

Gang Culture in South East England is generally centred in london which has lead to the rise of many gangs around the city, postcode wars are the main cause of all the deaths and stabbings between gangs due to one gang feeling the need to 'rep their ends' which means they feel the need to represent their area. As a result of this, this will make any other gang in other postcodes automatically become enemies due to the hostility between areas.
In researching Gang Culture, the most useful tool I can use to my advantage is Youtube, as many gang videos have been made of certain gangs disrespecting their rivals in other postcodes. This shows the increasing tension within London between these highly dangerous groups.
Also, using websites such as various news channels and broadcasters have accurate information about the different London Gangs and their activities within London.
