Shifty - 3 Scenes Deconstruction

CHASE SCENE

  •  No extreme use of camera angles are used here, a very level shot is used which keeps them all in the same level, due to the fact it is an urban drama, class is a very important aspect in urban dramas, therefore this camera angle signifies the fact that these people are of the same class and position
  • The main sound in this is the diagetic speech, the slang used gives the shot great regional identity as the use of words such as 'blud' allow you to identify where they are from and what kind of people they are.
  • The gestures in this shot such the fist pump also help add to the regional identity, as things such as this are very uncommon in higher society and mainly used in urban places.

  •  The use of the British police helps greatly in this chase scene, as our police have a very conventional look with the one blue light on umarked cars
  • The framing in this picture makes the chase seem more interesting due to the tight framing caused by the fences, this makes the chase seem more dangerous as tight fitting resembles less of a chance of escaping the chase

  • This wide angled shot allows you to see the scenery of where they are
  • The green scenery changes the fast pace of the scene as you associate green more with nature, therefore it changes from a fast paced chase to a slow chase where their hopes of getting away have increased
  • Also the loose framing in the shot reduces the sense of danger in the chase making them seem as if they are out of trouble which they are soon after.

TUNNEL SCENE

  •  The mise-en-scene of this shot is the important, the graffiti adds to the urban regional identity in the shot as graffiti is more associated with urban areas, once again this is an attempt to do everything in the producers power to associate the film with urban areas.

  • The producer uses the same use of framing here to show a sense of danger in this shot, in contrast to the image above, they are in the same tunnel but the framing is much looser and as soon as they turn the corner it is as if the danger have caught them just as they turned around the corner, the use of tighter framing and having this man approaching makes them seem like they have no hope of escaping once again.

  • This close up shot of the knife allows this item to be associated with urban areas as this is one of the main weapons used in urban areas in present day, however, the fact that it is only a stanley knife instead of a larger knife that can do more obvious harm we see that once again this isnt an attempt on shifty's life but more of an event that occurs in the protagonists daily lifestyle.

BLOCK OF FLATS SCENE

  •  This film continues to confirm to the conventions of an urban drama, this establishing shot is used to show the viewers the surrounding area where the scene is taking place, in doing so it sets the scene for what it about to happen and also allows the viewer to try and predict the conventions within the film e.g. the type of people they will come across and the danger they should predict.

  • This aerial shot is taken from the top of a high rise block of flats, it diminishes the protagonist and his partner making them seem extremely small in the grand scheme of things, it also isolates them greatly as if to say they are all alone in this concrete jungle that they are situated in.
